Who?s that DURL?
|
Who’s that DURL? Dubai’s transport links have evolved from the camel variety of five decades ago to almost every modern convenience in the new millennium. With airplanes, buses, taxis and automobiles crowding the skies and the roads, there is one vital transport element missing: the train. But look ahead to 2009 and there will be a new kid on the travel block – the Dubai Rail Link (DURL). A similar concept to bustling Bangkok’s Sky Train, which was launched in 1999 with the same objective of alleviating street traffic, or the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) in London, DURL will criss-cross the city with two lines initially, via a combined overground and underground network. |

UAE to Open Door on Foreign Ownership
|
The United Arab Emirates is preparing a law that would open the economy to greater foreign ownership, ending decades of restrictions that ensured local corporate dominance. Sheikha Lubna al-Qasimi, the economy and planning minister, said a long-awaited companies’ law would open some areas within the services sector to full foreign ownership. The law would also allow greater foreign participation in other areas, crucially in the fast-growing financial services industry, where outside investors are limited to minority stakes. |

International City - Italian Cluster building finished Casa Dubai completes.
|
Finally after less than two years since marketing the building in International City - Italian Cluster, Casa Dubai has completed and has already begun renting properties. Unit 19, has been delayed for just under 6 weeks (given the large number of buildings developed by Nakheel, this has to be regarded as a minor blip). During snagging there were some minor problems with water pressure (now resolved). On the whole the quality of the finish is excellent. Nakheel have set up a special office to deal with minor snagging expected in the coming months but Casa Dubai have extensively snagged each apartment and are satisfied that all are ready to let immediately and there are no serious problems. Many of the units have been rented out to locals who are desperate to live somewhere reasonably priced and within reasonable distance of their workplace. |

Dubai aims for another goal

| Had it come from any other source, the Dubai Strategic Plan 2015 would have sounded like an impossible dream. But when it is said by His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, there is an air of expectation that these dreams will be fulfilled. For it is well to remember, as Shaikh Mohammad once poignantly said, "the impossible does not exist in [the UAE's] dictionary". |
