Who’s that DURL?

Dubai’s transport links have evolved from the camel variety of five decades ago to almost every modern convenience in the new millennium.  With airplanes, buses, taxis and automobiles crowding the skies and the roads, there is one vital transport element missing: the train.

But look ahead to 2009 and there will be a new kid on the travel block – the Dubai Rail Link (DURL).  A similar concept to bustling Bangkok’s Sky Train, which was launched in 1999 with the same objective of alleviating street traffic, or the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) in London, DURL will criss-cross the city with two lines initially, via a combined overground and underground network.

The United Arab Emirates is preparing a law that would open the economy to greater foreign ownership, ending decades of restrictions that ensured local corporate dominance.

Sheikha Lubna al-Qasimi, the economy and planning minister, said a long-awaited companies’ law would open some areas within the services sector to full foreign ownership. The law would also allow greater foreign participation in other areas, crucially in the fast-growing financial services industry, where outside investors are limited to minority stakes.

Dubai: An expatriate will need a visit visa to enter the country.
If the expatriate comes to the UAE on a visit visa, he/she can extend the visa without travelling outside the country by paying a fee to the Naturalisation and Residency Department which issued the visa.

Dubai: Nakheel, the real estate company developing the Palm Jumeirah, has revealed the engineering details of its sub-sea tunnel, which links the main body of the Palm to the crescent.

The UAE has the most attractive environments for developing the travel and tourism industry in the Arab world, according to the first ranking of its kind in the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report 2007.

The UAE ranked 18th ahead of well-established tourism destinations Cyprus, Portugal and Greece in the 124-country survey released in Geneva on Thursday by the World Economic Forum (WEF).
